Passing of Estephane Diab

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Purgatory:

It is my sad duty to inform you that Estephane Diab, the father of Mrs. Amal Diab Barbour, passed away in Lebanon on December 7, 2020. Estephane was born on Jan 1, 1935 and resided most of his life in Lebanon and was self-employed as a Men’s Tailor. When he would visit the United States, he would attend Our Lady of Purgatory Church. He is survived by his wife Marie Abou Chalha, his daughters, Amal Diab Barbour and her husband Jacques Barbour, Nowal Diab Hamouch and her husband Ghassan Hamouch and their son, Elias Diab and his wife Hannan Haddad. Estephane has six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

We extend out condolences to Amal and Jacques Barbour and his family and to all of Estephane’s family in Lebanon

May Almight God welcome Estephane into His kingdom and may his soul rest in peace.

In Christ,

Fr. Vincent Farhat

2020 OLOP Giving Tree

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Purgatory:

As we approach Christmas, even during these challenging times, we all are trying to observe and enjoy our family and parish traditions. One our most rewarding Christmas Traditions here at OLOP is the annual Giving Tree, which is sponsored by the St. Joseph Sodality. This year’s Giving Tree program begins this weekend (December 12 & 13) and runs through Sunday, December 20, 2020. This year there are two options for those who would like to help those less fortunate during this Christmas season:

The two options are as follows:

Beginning this coming weekend (December 12 & 13) the Giving Tree, adorned with paper ornaments will be on the Altar. Each ornament contains a gift request. All you need to do is take a tag, purchase, wrap the gift, and tape the tag to the front of the gift box. All gifts must be delivered to OLOP no later than the 10:30 AM Liturgy on Sunday, December 20th. After Mass they will be gathered and then delivered to “New Day”, a program that provides services in the City of Brockton;

We are also gathering Gift Cards for Target or Walmart to be donated to Catholic Social Services in New Bedford. The gift cards can be in any denomination from $10.00 to $50.00. All gift cards should be delivered to OLOP no later than the 10:30 AM Liturgy on Sunday, December 20th. After Mass they will be gathered and they will be delivered to Catholic Social Services. You may donate one gift card or multiple gift cards, but we ask that they be from either Target or Walmart at the request of Catholic Social Services.

As the Prayer of St. Francis reminds us, “it is in giving that we receive.”

For further information about the 2020 OLOP Giving Tree Program, please contact Matt Thomas, Mae Dickinson, Jacque Barbour, or Annemarie Espindola. Thank you for your generosity.

In Christ,

Fr. Vincent Farhat

Lebanese Center Roof Replacement

Dear Parishioner of OLOP:

I hope this note finds you well and safe. I have attached a roof appeal letter to all of you regarding the roof at the Lebanese Center. As you know, the hall is rented out to PACE, Inc. They have moved in and have made much progress in fixing the hall. As you will read in the letter, part of the lease agreement is that we are responsible for exterior issues such as the roof and gutters, as well as the boiler/heating system. Since they moved in, we have had to replace and repair the basement cast iron drains that had holes in them from years of wear and tear. This was causing the basement to flood when it rained. We also had to seal all of the gutters that were rusted and not draining the rain water out to the street. And finally, we had to replace our roof shingles that were cracked and worn out, which caused leaking inside and the ceiling to collapse. All of these issues were addressed and repaired over the past few weeks. As far as the hall is concerned, we have replaced everything that we are obligated to fix at this time. I am confident that most of the upkeep and repairing pertaining to the hall have been addressed and that our responsibilities will be very limited from this point on.

I ask you to read the attached letter and if you are able to assist in any way, to offset the costs of the new roof, it would be greatly appreciated. I am mindful that this comes at a most difficult time, but as I have said before, this community will continue to flourish and strengthen even in times of adversity and difficulties.

God bless you and your families, and God bless this community of OLOP.

In Christ,
Fr. Vincent Farhat and The Finance Council of OLOP

These may be an isolated incident to a couple of parishioners, but nonetheless, please do not respond to them.
